Columns, Arches and Cloisters

Marco Polo is describing a bridge stone by stone.
“But which is the stone that supports the bridge?” asks Kubla Khan.
“The bridge isn’t supported by any one stone,” replies Marco Polo, “ but by the line of the arch they form.”
Kubla Khan remains silent, reflecting.
Then he says: “Why do you speak to me of the stones? It is only the arch that matters to me.”
Polo answers: “Without stones there is no arch.”

In any great design, details matter. Stone columns, arches and cloisters add drama and elegance to any space. They create visual links between the outside and the inside as well as providing a contrast of texture and injection of style.
